5 Steps Towards Intentional Living

So often we get caught up in work, TV, social media, and the day to day -- rarely do we get to stop and slow down to live with intention and thoughtfulness. Instead we mindlessly float from task to task or numb ourselves with various substances like TV, social media, alcohol, even cannabis and more. But right now we do have a unique and rare opportunity to stop, check in with ourselves and live intentionally - even if for only an hour a day, we must start somewhere.


Mindlessness is the opposite of intention and how we end up in situations that don't align with our core values and goals. And I don't know a single person who hasn't experienced a situation where their lack of intention bit them in the ass. With that said, there are many of us still wondering how to live intentionally. How do we practice living with intention? And why should we? So let's dive into the meaning of intention, how it can effect your life and ways to practice intention.



What is Intention?

Intention (adj.) - purposed; designed


Intention in the sense of our lives is the reasoning behind what drives our choices. Sometimes our intentions can deter and become a little dark or we can lose all site of our intentions and turn auto-pilot and become mindless.


The intentions behind our choices or the lack of greatly effects our lives and the paths we are on. In order to align with our core values and goals, we must practice living intentionally and authentically.



Intentions are powerful and our intentions have the power to either help us during our journey or cause destruction along the way.

Often we do not check in with ourselves or our intuition. We do not check in to see what the bigger picture for our life is and how we want to live in order to fulfill that dream.


What is Intentional Living?

Intentional living helps you design your life and do things on purpose. By turning auto-pilot off and tuning into ourselves we can actively and purposefully work towards our goals and align with our core values.


Intentional living allows you to make conscious decisions that can positively effect your life, given you are living intentionally and authentically. Living intentionally does not just happen overnight however, it takes action.


Why is it important?

We only have this one life as we who we currently are and what we do with it is up to us. We live on the planet of free will and when we live intentionally we honor ourselves and this life we have been given. We can align with our dreams and more freely flow. Living with intention is a step towards living authentically, and you can't have authenticity without intention.


Steps to Living with Intention

1. Turn Auto Pilot Off

We are often on auto-pilot just going through the motions and not really paying attention or aware of how we feel or our dreams. When you turn auto-pilot off, it can be scary - you have to deal with the shadow self and with the thoughts that you normally let slip your mind.


This is so important though, and the first step of the process. In order to live with intention and authenticity we must go inward. When you are finding yourself in a hard space repeat this affirmation:


I watch each thought and word without attachment, easily shifting to good feeling thoughts.

2. Define Your Values & Set Your Goals

Intention living requires intention - in order to know what your intentions are define your core values and goals in live. These can be as simple as do yoga daily to as complex as you can dream! Connect with your imagination, your left brain, and your highest self. Take the pop quiz below to define these.

3. Yoga with Adriene

Yoga is a great way to slow down and check in with yourself. Often when we think of yoga [if we don't do it] we can think of these crazy difficult and advanced positions but it doesn't have to be that and can be gentle and slow. That's why the LoP team love doing Yoga with Adriene on youtube.

4. Gratitude Journaling

Starting the morning off with a few minutes of gratitude is the best way to start your day. More often than not we grab our phones first - I challenge you to instead, allow yourself a few moments to wake up then grab your journal and write a list of what you are grateful.


It can be anything! From being grateful for your home and that you woke up, to being thankful that you have some delicious coffee in the pantry. Gratitude is contagious and naturally uplifting.


5. Unplug More

Unplugging from social media, the news, and technology in general is something we all need to do a little more. But especially when we are trying to live more intentionally and authentically. We don't realize the effect such things have on our subconscious yet we are shaped by them daily.


Mindlessly scrolling and watching numbs our senses and removes us from ourselves. While it can be a nice escape and relaxing even at times, it is important to be aware of what we are intaking and how much. Make sure you are still leaving time to connect with you. When's the last time you were truly alone with your thoughts?



Bonus: Intentional Cacao Ceremony

If you're wanting to dive a little deeper into your intentions, a good way is through a Cacao ceremony. Cacao has been used ceremonially for centuries and has a plethora of benefits, both physical and spiritual.


When making your cup of Cacao stir love and intention into the drink. For added measure you can perform a White Light Shield over yourself and the plant medicine while preparing and before consuming.



At the end of the day, even just practicing awareness and basic intention throughout your day is a step in the right direction. Be gentle and loving with yourself along your journey and remember like most things, cultivating an intentional life takes discipline and practice.
